My Personal SUTTON Family Research

SUTTON Coat of Arms

My principal research interest: Joshua and Catherine [Hamilton] Sutton and descendants.

My direct SUTTON family genealogical research leads back only as far as the early 1800s. I have traced them back from Massachusetts where my father was born to Quebec, first Montreal and then back to Kingsey Falls and then Wendover. Wendover, Quebec is a river community in Drummond county, just outside of Drummondville. Drummondville is found about 65 miles Northeast of Montreal.

I am focusing research on the family of Joshua and Catherine [Hamilton] Sutton of Wendover, Drummond county, Quebec. I believe from a review of Census entries that they arrived in Quebec between 1821 and 1825 from Ireland. The 1825 Canadian Census finds a Joshua Sutton family in Wendover with 10 'inmates.' There may be four additional family members that are now unknown to us, certainly there is a 10-12 year gap between Robert aad Mary's birthdates and those of William Hamilton and Alicia M.

Children:

1. Elizabeth SUTTON, born ca 1802. She married Henry Johnson on 7 May 1827 in Drummondville, Quebec. She died 30 April 1851 a few miles south in Barnston, Stanstead Co, Quebec where she was living with other family.,

2. Robert SUTTON, born ca 1803-05 in Ireland according to later Census responses, married Sarah C. Buckland on 15 Oct. 1829 at St. James CE in Hatley, Stanstead county, Quebec and lived nearby in Barford, Quebec. Robert moved after 1870 to Turner, Maine USA where he died in 1880. He and Sarah had nine children.

3. Mary SUTTON, married Thomas William BRIDSON, Lumber Merchant, on 12 Aug 1825 at the Sutton farm in Wendover, Drummond County, Quebec. Both are reported decesased on the 8 Sep 1859 date of the marriage of their daughter Eliza to Andrew DUNCAN. Mary and Thomas may have been living in Quebec City when they died.

4. Ann SUTTON, born October 1809, perhaps in Clogheen, County Tipperary, Ireland.

5. Julia SUTTON, born June 1813, perhaps in Clogheen, County Tipperary, Ireland.

6. William Hamilton "James" SUTTON, born November 1817, perhaps in Béal Átha Póirin, County Tipperary, Ireland, was married in 1846 in Kingsey, Drummond Co., Quebec, Canada to Mary Abercrombie of the Robert Spence Abercrombie family. He died in Kingsey Falls on 2 May 1861. He had six children several of whom moved to Worcester, Massachusetts, and NH. Mary died in nearby Danville, Quebec.

7. Alicia Marie SUTTON, born abt 1819-1821 perhaps in Ireland, married Alexander SCOTT in 1847 at St. Paul CE in Kingsey Falls, Drummond Co., Quebec. She died on 11 Apr. 1874 and is buried in Crooker Brook cemetery in Dixville, Stanstead Co., Quebec. Alicia and Alexander had five children.

8. George SUTTON, born May 1820, perhaps in Béal Átha Póirin, County Tipperary, Ireland.

I collected the information above from in-person research in Quebec and from primary documents such as church register entries for Birth, Marriage, and Death as well as other documents available in Records Offices in Quebec and in Mormon Genealogical Libraries.

My distant cousin Janice Cushman has researched surviving records in Ireland through personal trips and believes she can connect the Drummond County family of Joshua Sutton to the Caesar Sutton and Elizabeth Goff family living in County Westmeath or County Wexford, Ireland.

Caesar Sutton is one of four children of William Sutton, born ca 1690 in Longrange, Wexford, Ireland. and Elinora Maria Colclouah, born ca 1693, died September 1741 in Wexford, County Wexford, Ireland, who married in 1718 in County Wexford, Ireland.

Mapping these SUTTON's Migration from 1825

Mapping Sutton Family Migration

The earliest known location for this Sutton line is Wendover, Quebec in Drummond county. Today the area is known by its French Canadian name, Saint-Cyrille-de-Wendover. The family appears on the Canadian Census for 1825. I've developed maps showing the areas where this Sutton's family members lived in various timeframes as documented in Census records, City Directories, or other primary research materials. It is a work in progress with more detail being added as family members are located.

My July 1995 Research Trip to Quebec

This article originally appeared in Issue 19 of the SUTTON SEARCHERS newsletter.

It is very difficult for me to know where to begin to describe my too short but wonderful trip through Vermont into Quebec this past July. If you were to know me you'd understand that I am easily distracted into sidebar discussions or explanations on any subject but generally manage to find my way back to closure on a given topic. So I struggle now whether to tell you first about my wonderful hosts, Ian and Shirley Smith; the beauty of an automobile drive through upstate New York, Vermont and lower Quebec counties; or the SUTTON family research breakthroughs that I had.

I will begin chronologically. [That sentence proves I'm no professional writer!] I finished a three day business seminar last July in New Jersey and left immediately for Stanstead Co., Quebec. Stanstead county and the town of the same name are immediately north of the state of Vermont. I drove through New York and Vermont the first day and got as far as Burlington, VT where I spent the night. Burlington is in Chittenden county where many early generations of Sutton families lived. It was exciting to drive through the towns with names I've come to know from hours of census study.

The SUTTON SEARCHERS Newsletter was published by Jim Sutton from 1993 through 1997.

My friend and fellow Sutton family researcher Brian Sutton has an extensive website and genealogy resource page for another SUTTON family living in Quebec at the same time as my line. This SUTTON family is of English origin and emigrated to Lower Canada (Quebec) after the American Revolution.

Brian's SUTTON information can be found at http://philpotsutton.atwebpages.com.

James Sutton

A picture believed to be of James A Sutton, born in Kingsey Falls, Quebec who appears in Montreal in 1881, marries, and later moves his family to Worcester, MA. He died in Worcester in 1924. This photo was provided by Chris Godfrey who is researching the ABERCROMBIE and SUTTON families of the Kingsey Falls area. Click here to see a larger picture.

SUTTON SEARCHERS Newsletter

The SUTTON SEARCHERS newsletter was published for eight years from 1989 to 1997. The original impetus for all my genealogy research was to validate a naming convention for my son that I understood had been passed down through the family. But I was ultimately overruled and my wife picked a non-family related name for our son.
