Reverand David Sutton

submitted by J. Richard Sutton - written by Elsie W. Iams

The Reverand David Sutton was the fifth pastor of the North Ten Mile Baptist Church. He served the church for a period of 33 years, but back in those early days church services were very irregular mostly only twice a month and perhaps not at all in bad winter or when the Indians were on the war path.

The Reverand David Sutton was born about 1730 in New Jersey and first married Anne Winters who was born in Middletown, New Jersey and buried in Washington County 1783 or 1784. Then Reverand David Sutton married Phoebe ? , who was born 1730 and died December 25, 1817.

The children of Reverand David and Anne Winters are:

  1. David
  2. John
  3. James.

Of those three children, James married Susanna Buckingham. Their children were:

  1. William B. who married Jane Nixon;
  2. Jessie;
  3. Ann, who married Benjamin Raymond Whitcom;
  4. Sarah, who married John Boone;
  5. Rhoda, married October 29 1829 to George W. Balsee or Balser;
  6. Mary married George Boone;
  7. Andrew born about 1775 married Anne Paul who was born February 16, 1793 and died June 16, 1817;
  8. Anna, married Samuel Parkhurst (Could this have been our first church clerk? If so, he was a beautiful writer.);
  9. Catharine who married David Frazee (Is this the David Frazee, who with Andrew Sutton, signed the deed to our first church land purchased by T.A. McFarland, a trustee of our church?); and
  10. Sarah, who married Daniel Wilson September 23, 1784.

This makes ten children in all.

Reverand David Sutton's father was Reverand David Sutton, Senior, born in New Jersey, July 31, 1703 and died in New Jersey in December 19, 1775. His wife was Elizabeth Cox. Reverand David Sutton Senior and wife Elizabeth had five sons: Isaac, John, James, Abraham and our pastor, David. All five were ministers. (This raised more questions. Could this James have been our first pastor? Could this Isaac have been the first pastor of Great Bethel Baptist at Uniontown? and who also preached at our church a few times?) In trying to answer these questions, I am including some entries from our own church's minutes. As follows:

Our minutes of September 6, 1775, contain this statement - "Mary, wife of Abraham Sutton, upon oath chargeth him (James Sutton, our first pastor) with indecent behaviour toward her."

On October 13, 1775, this statement occurs in our minutes: "Consulted upon the scandalous report brought against Brother James Sutton, a member of this church and a minister by letter of dismission from the Church of Christ at Scotch Plains, New Jersey and found no cause of accusation."

In our minutes of February 16, 1776 we find that Abram Sutton was the moderator of that meeting. Also we read there that some money was collected for Brothers James Sutton towards paying for his place. In the spring of 1776 James Sutton Junior, son of our first pastor, was the first person baptized in the North Ten Mile Baptist Church. Later in other minutes we find that James Junior was suspended and had to come before the church to confess his error and be reinstated.

On June 14, 1777 we find Isaac Sutton, a minister - perhaps for that time or two or three. He was chosen moderator of this meeting also.

In the September 4, 1779 minutes we find James Sutton, John Buckingham (who is buried in Franklin Cemetery), and Samuel Parkhurst were messengers (delegates) to the Redstone Association of Baptist Churches.

On May 1, 1783 our minutes state that Reverand David Sutton made a visit from the Jerseys and the church gave him an invitation to come and settle among them which he accepted and came the next fall. In the December 1783 minutes we read that "by subscription they (church) tried to make up something for the support of Reverand David Sutton and his family. Thus, ends the entries from our church records.

Reverand David Sutton Senior moved to Bernardsville, New Jersey, where he died and is buried.

Reverand David Sutton's grandfather was John Sutton, born April 20, 1674, died December 1750, married about 1695 to Elizabeth Conger, who was born February 11, 1680 and died May 10, 1731 and is buried in Stelton, New Jersey.

Reverand David's great-grandfather was William Sutton born 1641, died April 28, 1718 in Woodbridge, New Jersey. Married first to Damaris Bishop who died February 6, 1682-3; then he married Jane Barnes on January 3, 1683-4. William Sutton was a Quaker by faith. He served as constable in 1673 in Piscataway, New Jersey and left no will.

Reverand David's great-great-grandfather was George Sutton, who possibly was born in 1613 and died 1669. He married Sarah Tilden born 1613 and died 1677. George came from Kent, England on the "Hercules" and was also a Quaker by faith.

Reverand David Sutton's daughter, Anna, who married Samuel Parkhurst, had six children: 1. Reuben, 2. Catherine, 3. Ruth, 4. David, 5. Rhoda, 6. William.

Reverand David Sutton's daughter, Catherine, who married David Frazee, had three children: 1. David L., 2. Sarah (Sallie), 3. Andrew Sutton Frazee. Andrew married Leah Moninger; Sarah married Peter Miller; and David L. married Amy Cooper.

Andrew Sutton and Leah Moninger Frazee had a son named David L. Frazee, who was known as D.L. He was born February 4, 1850 and died December 21, 1915. D.L. married Eliza Horn, daughter of Adam Horn. They had a son, Newell Frazee, who married Estella Marie Sutton, who survives. She is one of the oldest members of the North Ten Mile Baptist church and still lives in Canonsburg.

Reverand David Sutton is buried on the hillside opposite Newell Frazee's home on the Frazee land.

20 Ways To Avoid Grief In Your Genealogical Research

written by Margaret M. Sharon, Academic Computing Services, Simon Fraser University, Burnaby B.C. Canada

This article was originally written for The British Columbia Genealogist, vol. 17 #1, Mar/88.

The following suggestions and recommendations will be helpful to beginners and hopefully will prevent misfortune when learning how to do genealogical research. Many of these tips are "old hat" to experienced genealogists, but it is always worthwhile to remind ourselves of the basics of sound research.

1. ALWAYS note the source of any material you photocopy. If the information is from a library book, note the name, author, date, publisher and also the library where you found the book, or photocopy the title page. Occasionally you will find that you need to refer to the book again, or photocopy more information from it.

2. Make photocopies or carbon copies of ALL letters you write. This will save you from wondering which of your correspondents' questions you answered already, and which of your questions they have or haven't answered.

3. Don't procrastinate in responding to letters or messages you receive. If you don't have time to write a detailed reply, send your correspondent a quick reply or postcard to acknowledge receipt and give him/her a rough idea of when a reply will be forthcoming. Then be sure to write back as you've promised to.

4. When searching for relatives in records, don't pass over the entries that are almost but not quite right. For example, if you are searching for the marriage of John Brown and Mary Jones in 1850, make a note of the marriage of John Brown and Nancy Smith in 1847: this could be a previous marriage in which the wife died shortly after.

5. When writing to libraries or genealogical/historical societies in your areas of interest, ask them for the names and addresses of out-of-print booksellers in the area. Write to the booksellers and ask if they have any old local histories or family histories pertaining to the area.

6. Don't forget to make frequent backups of your computer disks.

7. Store backup copies of your computer disks and photocopies of your irreplaceable documents in your safety deposit box or someone else's home.

8. Remember that "if it's in print, it ain't necessarily fact." Information in recently published local and family histories is often based on that from older published works. If the older books are incorrect, the erroneous information is simply repeated and further disseminated.

9. The earlier the time period in which you are researching, the less consistent our ancestors were about the spelling of their surnames. Also, many of them were illiterate and could not tell a record keeper how their names should be spelled.

10. Family traditions of close connections to famous figures are usually false, but there may be a more obscure relationship involved. Perhaps the famous person spent a night at your ancestor's country estate instead of (as the legend goes) marrying into the family.

11. Try not to let your research get behind. Establish a filing system for your papers (using file folders or 3-ring binders) and file each page of notes, document, photocopy, etc. as you acquire it. There are few things more disheartening than contemplating a foot-high stack of unfiled papers, wondering if the birth certificate you desperately need to refer to is somewhere in it.

12. Double-check all dates to make sure they are possible, for example, a woman born in 1790 could not be a mother in 1800.

13. Be on the lookout for nicknames. A request for a birth record for Sadie White may be rejected if the name on file is Sarah White.

14. Beware of mail-order promotions offering personalized genealogies of your surname with titles such as "The Amazing Story of the BLANK Family" or "The BLANK Family New World Registry." These are usually little more than computer-assembled lists of names from telephone directories. Notify the Better Business Bureau, postal authorities and consumers advocate agencies if you receive one of these.

15. Don't assume modern meanings for terms used to describe relationships. For example, in the 17th century a step-child was often called a "son-in-law" or "daughter-in-law," and a "cousin" could refer to almost any relative except a sibling or child.

16. Remember that indexes to books rarely include the names of ALL persons mentioned in the book and, in addition, occasionally contain errors. If it appears that a book is likely to have valuable information, spend some time skimming its contents rather than returning it to the shelf after a quick glance at the index.

17. Be precise when making notes and especially when sharing information with others. Write dates using an unambiguous format: Americans interpret 5/6/1881 as 6 May 1881, but in many other countries it would be read as 5 June 1881. Always capitalize or underline surnames, some of which can be mistaken for given names, e.g., HENRY, HOWARD. Note place names in full, including parish or township, county, state or province, and country.

18. You will often encounter conflicting information and you will have to weigh it against other evidence to try to determine which is the most likely to be true. Periodically review and verify the conclusions you have reached concerning each of your ancestors' lives: this will help to prevent you from wasting time following blind alleys.

19. Place names and boundaries have changed constantly over the years. Always verify them in historical atlases or genealogical texts pertaining to the area. For example, the boundaries of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania have changed four times since it was first settled.

20. Whenever and wherever possible, advertise the surnames you are researching by submitting them to genealogical directories and surname lists published by genealogical societies that you belong to. This will put you in touch with others who are researching the same surnames, possibly for a much longer time. After all, the most rewarding genealogical research is that which no-one else has already done!

Mason Dixon Sutton's

by Imelda (Sutton) Nesteby, 312 First St, Decorah, IA 52101-1402

A book titled "BALTIMORE COUNTY FAMILIES, 1659-1759" BY: Robert W. Barnes, copyrighted in 1985, has been a great resource for the tracking of my Sutton lineage. Information from the Rent Rolls and Census have also helped. According to the Rent Rolls, there as a Thomas Sutton in Anne Arundel County, where SUTTONS CHOYCE, a 307 acres parcel on the South Side of the Magothy River, was surveyed for him on 20 Jul 1860. SUTTON'S ADDITION was surveyed for him on 28 Mar 1688 on Burgess Creek.

There seemed to be a great movement from Anne Arundel County into Baltimore County in the mid 1750's or a little earlier, and Thomas of the tavern, Joseph (my progenitor), and perhaps others were of an age to have been his sons. SUTTON'S DELIGHT was a tract of land held also by Thomas that eventually and very painstakingly with the help of Joseph, was put together to form 685 acres being surveyed as such in 1793. This was located in Maryland, in what is now known as Shane. This is just across the Pennsylvania border on the Mason Dixon Line.

My progenitor Joseph, had a brother Thomas who ran the tavern on Old York Road. Documented in George Washington's Diary in 1773, George stated: "Lodged at Suttons". This was on the night of 5 June 1773, when George was on his way home to Virginia from New York via the way of Philadelphia, Lancaster and New York.

In the 1860's, the Sutton Tavern was operated by Joseph Brian and in the 70's Elbridge Sutton on Old York Road where it crosses the Little Gunpowder, the Harford County Line and this was the original Sutton Tavern. Looking at a 1850 Baltimore County Map one can note that if you look slightly to your left, towards the West, you will see Suttons Tavern on a corner, on the Old York Road. This was the tract of Sutton's Delight, which was taken up by Thomas Sutton in the 1760's.

Thomas Sutton seems to have stayed on at the tavern, and it was probably after his death sometime around 1860 or so, that the tavern property was sold to Arthur Shane. The village name was changed to SHANE and the tavern became a store. Several years ago, it burned down.

We don't know who the original Thomas, father of the Thomas of the tavern, married. (First or last name was Dorcas). We are assuming that Mordecai, Joseph and Thomas to be sons. (Isaac had died). No one seems to know about their descendants and Nicholas Sutton is the only one in the area as it appeared on the 1850 map. There wasn't any evidence of Sutton's Delight on the 1877 map. They couldn't have been daughters, as Elbridge, Luther and David moved down to the 10th district. It seems that these could be sons of the Tavern Thomas and possibly a David. I have written for a copy of his will so maybe I'll find out something.

To further along the story, Joseph my progenitor, was a brother of Thomas of the tavern. It appears that Sutton's Delight was broken up by deeds dated 14 Sep 1803. At that time, it was deeded to four grandsons of Joseph. Two were of Henry Adams Sutton (Mordecai & Joseph), and two were sons of Joseph, Jr., (Christopher and John). Joseph Sutton had a son Thomas who married Mary Ann Shipley. All of their children were born in Shane, Baltimore County, MD. (Benjamen, Joseph, Nicholas, Thomas and Mary Dorcas who became the wife of Wm. Kirkwood). Nicholas married Mary Ann Doran and lived in Shane County at least until the time of his second child's birth. He was there when the 1850 census was taken. We do know that as an old man, he left and moved to his son Joseph's in Ohio dying in 1872. I do know that he and his wife are buried in the Mattingly Settlement Cemetery near Zanesville, Ohio as five or more generations of Sutton's are buried.

Joseph Sutton became a farmer when he moved to Ohio and married Annastasia Mattingly. He was very well regarded and respected and became one of the counties most successful farmers, living in Muskingum County and becoming parents of 12 children, one of which was my grandfather John Liguori.

I am happy to think that my grandfather searched out a better land as a farmer and moved to the Northeast corner of Iowa. He truly came to God's Country for scenery and for the richness of the soil.

In the frontispiece of another book titled "THE FOUNDERS OF ANNE ARUNDEL AND HOWARD COUNTIES MARYLAND" reads as follows: "At the beginning of this new century we are going to the garrets bringing out of the portraits of our forefathers, brushing off the dust,putting them into new frames and handing them down to our children. Search the records for their good deeds." Somehow this sums up my searching for the Sutton's lost and wish all of you HAPPY SEARCHING!

Letters

Dear Jim,

I just recently came across a copy of the 1994 Genealogical Research Directory and came across your contribution to it. For the last few months I had been pondering the idea of what would an Irish Sutton Association or Society be like to form. The two main aims of this Association would be to help Sutton researchers and associated families to trace their Sutton ancestry through members and the second aim would be to collect the part our Sutton ancestors played in history. This latter part I have done for County Wexford but by no means would I call it complete. Items of interest are always coming to light and they could be expanded upon by further research. Some genealogy has been collected for some of the main County Wexford families.

County Wexford was a particular stronghold of Suttons in time past and were therefore fairly well documented. They had castles or tower houses & held positions dignitary. One of particular interest to me is the family of Thomas, Count Sutton de Clonard. This title was conferred on him by Louis XV of France. Thomas became a 'syndic' of the French East India Company. Two of his four sons joined the Irish Brigade, while Ambrose and the other son, Thomas, entered the naval service. The latter was killed during d'Estaings attack on St. Lucia island. Ambrose, who received the title of Chevalier de Clonard had a distinguished career in the naval service. Among his exploits, he seen naval service/action during the American War of Independence. La Perouse, the great French explorer, made him second in command on his great voyage of discovery. Unfortunately, none ever returned from the expedition. Evidence showed that some of the expedition had been killed and eaten by Santa Cruz islanders. One of Count Sutton de Clonard's daughters, Frances, married into a French noble family and became the mother of the celebrated Marshal Bugeaud, the conqueror of Algeria. A second daughter, Eleanore, married Daniel MacCarthy. Their oldest son, John, married Francoise Georgine Lawton, one of the distinguished Irish wine trading family in France.

I also have an interest in local history and am a member of three historical societies and the Wexford Family History Society.

Dear Jim,

I will start with all the family history known to me on the SUTTON side starting with my mother: Lois Ruth SUTTON, b. 20 Oct 1931. Lois Ruth's parents were Alice Dorothy Minick, b. 13 Jan 1896 in Solon, Iowa, d. 1 Feb 1990, and Alfred Howell SUTTON, b. 7 Feb 1882 in Walnut Springs, TX, d. 1 Oct 1970. Children: Leroy, Alfred Howell, Jr., Forest, Mildred, Henry, and Lois Ruth. This family lived in Weatherford, Colony, Cloud Chief, OK and Freemont, TX.

Alfred Howell SUTTON's parents were Mattie Ida Ellison, b. 7 Nov 1861 in Brazos Co., TX and Fountain Duke SUTTON, b. 23 Mar 1859 in Ellis Co., TX, d. 16 Dec 1947. children: Etta May, Alfred Howell, America Love, Fountain Duke, Wiley Eugene, Jess Roscoe, Oklahoma (Homer), and Zechariah Len who resided in Freemont, TX.

Fountain Duke SUTTON's parents were Sarah Sally Forbes (Solly Forbush-Indian?), b. 1826 McNairy Co., TN; d. Feb 1886 and Solomon Dill SUTTON. b. 12 JAN 1818, D 1904. They lived in Denton, TX. children: Will, America (Meck), Fountain Duke, and Lafette (Uncle Fay).

Mattie Ida's [Alfred Howell Sutton's mother] parents were Mary Williams, b. AL and Martin M. Ellison, b. GA. children: Wiley (Buddy), Emma, Livley, and Mattie Ida.

This is as much information I have been able to find. I believe that my Great-uncle Len's son may have more information; however, I have yet to write to him.

Jim,

Yes, my exwife is named Nancy MILLS SUTTON and her brother (1 of several) is named Steven YANCEY SUTTON and the descend from the Cabell family of Virginia. Dr. William CABELL (originally KBELL in England) was a British Surgeon, Pioneer, Explorer, Soldier that fought AGAINST Britain during the American Revolutionary War. He and his family settled NELSON County VIRGINIA and owned several homes there as his children and grandchildren married. The 1st built was called "SOLDIER's JOY" Nelson County, VIRGINIA because we won that war. That was restored recently and is most likely in the registry of VIRGINIA HISTORIC HOMES as is "TRAVELER'S REST" (HORSELEY) and many others. I did a thorough Photo Documentary during that entire restoration and was paid handsomely. Something I felt was fascinating is this> It was a huge house, a MANSION that had a wing for a Ballroom. This Ballroom was Sold to the Museum in Ohio as a Pre Revolutionary War Ballroom! It was dismantled carefully in archaeological style, moved to Ohio and cleaned up board by board and reassembled in that Ohio Museum. The _REASON_ the Ballroom (complete with HorseShoe Prints pounded in the floor from celebrating) was Sold was to gain money to Restore the Main House.
Respectfully,

MAURY in VIRGINIA [Genie electronic mail address: W.MORRIS19]

P.S. My Second Wife is a SUTTON. I wrote previously that I married a SUTTON who descends from Major Charles YANCEY as well as Dr. William CABELL all from Virginia. Our marriage was praised by many because we brought a Traditional Southern Aristocratic Marriage into being. Me Hey, I was just simply getting married but there was much made of our marriage and lots of old prominent Virginia families The thing caused me to think of Two Banks Merging together!

Anyhow, her SUTTONS were from MARYLAND and from SUTTON HO on England's South Southeast Coast. MILLS was also a part of her family, Whathisname MILLS was President of Tredgar Iron Works in Richmond VA during the American Civil War NICHOLAS was his 1st name. What state do you live in now Jim ?

NANCY MILLS SUTTON was my 2nd Wife, a Blonde probably from her BLANKENSHIP family line which is German. I have 2 grown sons by a Brunette McGRADY and 1 grown son by a Blonde SUTTON and I'm not through yet. :)

Dear Jim:

I am a relatively new SUTTON SEARCHER, encouraged by two older sisters. From the two charts enclosed, you can see the line which I am descended. James Sutton, born in Guilford, NC and buried at Defeated Creek, TN, fought in the Revolutionary War, as did his father-in-law, Jonathan Trickle (for the state of North Caroline).

There is an annual reunion of the Anderson Sutton descendants in Nolanville, TX. The ramrod is Harold Sutton whose address appears on the announcement I've enclosed. I have quite a lot of information on this line that I am anxious to share, however, it is not very well organized. Hopefully the newsletter will help me get in touch with others who need it.
Les Sutton, 254 Old Spring Ln, Houston, TX 77015-2042

Les: You might start by contacting Bruce D. Sutton, 190 Academy St, Canton, NC 28716-4632 or the next letter regarding this line. The reunion organizer listed in Les' letter was Harold Sutton, 1411 N. Tenth St, Killeen, TX 76541 Tel:(817) 534-3459 - Jim

Dear Mr. Sutton:

Back in June I wrote to you concerning Dempsey Sutton (b. 1795 GA) and wife, Elizabeth Donoho. You were very kind in replying and giving me the name of Robert D. Sutton of Killeen, TX, who had submitted material on this family to your newsletter. I wrote to Robert Sutton in July but I have not heard from him so I am writing to you again.

I finally located date of death for Elizabeth Cox in Bell Co., TX but no death certificate is on file so I still don't know who her parents were.

I also have a Sutton document from Stone Co., Ark., Genealogy Society that begins with James Sutton of Wales who came to NC ca 1650, had son, James, who had son, James, who was born 1736 Guilford, NC, married in GA and settled in Smith Co., TN. His son was our Dempsey b. 1795 GA, lived TN and died 1843 in Ark. I do have some date on James, father of Dempsey, including his will, but I have nothing on the line back to immigrant from Wales.

Dear Jim,

Searching for the Sutton clan has now become addicting. It appears that the door is opening to more lines and more sure it seems we all started in England. There is so much similarity in names that I think somewhere some of us will tie in sooner or later.

I have to give credit to John Larry Sutton from Dresden, Ohio whom you should have received a letter and subscription from by now. Our grandfathers Lawrence I. and John Liguori were brothers from a family of 12, all born in Muskingum County, OHIO, the sons of Nicholas and Mary Ann Doran Sutton. Larry and I finally met last summer after ten years or more of correspondence. He has researched much information at Annapolis, MD. One of the most interesting events is that George Washington wrote in his diary that he slept at Sutton's Tavern on York Road 5 June 1773. This Thomas (17 Apr 1722-died Baltimore Co., MD 1783) was the son of Thomas who died 2 July 1729 and was married to a ???Dorcas who died abt 1750.

I do not know who Thomas was married to, but it is believed that he had Mordecai, Joseph, Thomas, Isaac and David.

Thomas would have been a brother to Joseph (1724-1810) who married Ruth Adams, the progenitor of my direct line, whose son Thomas (19 Mar 1799-d. May 1845 Shane Co., MD) married to Mary Ann Shipley. One of their five children was Nicholas 13 Jun 1803-5 Mar 1872) who married Mary Ann Doran.

I have almost complete information from the Nicholas line down to date.

Dr. Henry Thomas Sutton started the Good Samaritan Hospital in Zanesville, Ohio which is still in operation today. He was one of 12 in my grandfathers family. Maybe somewhere some one can relate to him, as he was well known.

On an interesting note, my son ran into a fellow in chow line in boot camp in Orlando a few years back with the name SUTTON. He almost did a double take as the fellow looked so much like my father. All he ever found out was that he was from Kentucky and never seen him again.

Hope my lengthy story is not too confusing or boring, but it lays the ground work for you. I have now sent to the Maryland Archives for the Probate of the will of Thomas Sutton. This should answer the question to his heirs or children. If I can be of any help to you please phone or write. I find the Sutton Searchers information interesting and hopefully, we'll find someone who is related.

Dear Sutton Searchers:

Just want you to know how much I enjoy the newsletter, so far no one seems to be researching the same line that I am. I am sending a list of Suttons in Laurel Co., KY from 1840 to 1900 census. My husband's gr-grandfather was Bailey Sutton; his grandfather was Harve/Harvey and father George V. So far I have not found a connection to the other Suttons in Laurel Cty.

In the 1860 Laurel Co., KY Census there is a Hannah Sutton, 97 years old, from NC listed with the family of Peter Hearst. Can anyone help me with her; could she be Bailey Sutton's mother?

I work with the Laurel County Historical Society and if I can be of any help to anyone in this area please let me know.

Dear Jim:

You're doing a great job with your most informative newsletter. I keep hoping I'll be able to make a connection with someone that has some knowledge of the family that my great grandfather, John T. Sutton, belongs in. He was b. 1834 in Albany Co., NY, m. 22 Sep 1861 to Eliza Ann Mallory in Racine, OH, d. 26 Aug 1864 of a gunshot in the Civil War in Halltown - near Harper's Ferry, VA.
